Students using computers and phones in One Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵPlaza

Research Computing

Research Computing is an emerging part of the fabric of Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ that engages student academic course work, departmental research and the disciplines across all five schools, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health Professions and Law.

Research Computing under the Division of Information Technology Services (ITS) provides resources, infrastructure and technical support required to meet the research demands of the Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ faculty, researchers, and students.

The resources and services provided include computational and visualization solutions, hardware, software, system administration and support.

University Policies

As a user of University resources there are policies and procedures that you must abide by in addition to all of the federal, state and grant or funding guidelines and requirements.

Prior to beginning any research project we recommend that all parties read and understand these guidelines, policies and procedures. Information Technology Services (ITS) publishes University policies, procedures and standards to guide our community in the use of University technology resources.

Getting Started

Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ resources are available to all members of the Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵcommunity. ITS can also establish user accounts for collaborators from outside of the Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵcommunity. Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵoffers two types of user accounts for collaborators, a PI Account and a general Guess User Account. All general Guess Users must be sponsored by a Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵEmployee or PI with an active Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵaccount.

More information about creating an account can be found here.

Technical Support

ITS Help Desk is available by phone, email, and live chat to assist you with any technology related questions or concerns. ITS provides remote, onsite and walk-in service for hardware and software issues for Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵowned equipment or student owned PCs.

Note: The Walk-in Center is located inside the Computer Resource Center on either the New York or Pleasantville campus.

General IT Security Guidelines

Identity thieves are constantly trying new ways to compromise devices and to steal personal information. Phishing schemes have increased significantly and are getting more sophisticated. Users need to be extra vigilant when checking email or going online.

These steps below can help you to be a bit more secure.

  • Make sure you have the latest patches and antivirus updates on your computer and other devices (smartphones, tablets, and laptops.)
  • NEVER give anyone your username, password, or any other personal info.
  • Do not open emails, attachments, or links from unknown sources.
  • Do not visit untrusted websites; this will reduce any chances of your computer or device getting infected with malware.
  • Physical security of your devices is also important; make sure you enable password PINs on your devices, in case they are ever lost or stolen.

Stay informed about reported spam or phishing schemes by going to the or subscribe to our ITNotices Listserv, which will also provide you with additional important IT-related updates.

Research Hardware and Networking

Research Hardware

Information Technology Services (ITS) provides standard hardware for faculty and staff for typical campus use however research computing usually requires a more robust solution.

Hardware Purchases for Research

ITS consults directly with Dell and Apple to select computer configurations that best fit the needs of researchers. These options are fully supported. Additionally, ITS works with Procurement to ensure optimal pricing, regardless of funding.

Research Computing Tier I

  • Intel® Coreâ„¢ i7- Quad Core, 8MB, 3.60GHz
  • 12GB (3x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3 Memory
  • 500GB 3.5inch SATA (7.200 RPM) Hard Drive

  • 1 TB 3.5inch SATA (7.200 RPM) Hard Drive
  • AMD Radeon R7 250 2GB Video Card

Networking

Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ maintains both a wired and wireless network. The University’s internal network has massive bandwidth between campuses via a fiber optic network with multi-redundancies and/or backups.

Network Speeds (Wired)

  • Core network: 10gbps (gigabits per second)

Network Speeds (Wireless)

  • The wireless network supports 802.11a/b/g/n wireless clients
  • Speeds up to 300mbps are supported

To Access Pace's Resources from Other Locations

  • Connecting to Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵResources from Off-Campus

Research Software and Applications

Research Software

Software Licenses provides a listing of software available University wide to the Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵcommunity. The ITS Contracts and Licensing Group works closely with all groups involved in the licensing process to ensure your needs are met and constaint review of the list of software is done throughout the year. Some of the key and new resources are listed below and you can get more information here.

  • Endnote
  • Lab Archives
  • LinkedLn Learning
  • Poll Everywhere
  • Qualtrics
  • SAS
  • SPSS

Applications Download and Account Management (ADAM)

The page is a small collection of software that you can download directly from the web. This includes Microsoft Office for both Mac and PC, Skype for Business, Endnote, SAS and other software for current Faculty, Staff, and Students of Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ.

Note: If your browser blocks pop-ups, you may need to click on 'allow pop-ups' at the top of the screen to begin your VPN session. Also, during the installation, you may be prompted to accept security certificates more than once; you should allow these in order to continue.

Remote Access To Internal Resources (VPN)

The Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ provides a mechanism for the computers that are using it to be part of the Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ network when that computer is not physically on any Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵcampus.

From off campus you can connect directly to the Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ network through a web browser. This solution is now available for Macintosh OSX, Linux and Windows Vista users including the 64-bit architecture.

Web File Storage and File Sharing (WFS)

The online tool allows for the online storage and sharing of file via a web interface. You have share content through a password protected link. You upload and store documents for easy access and retrieval anytime, anywhere.

Collaboration and Communication

Collaboration and Video Conferencing

Skype For Business is a unified communications solution from Microsoft that facilitates online collaboration through a rich set of integrated features. Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵstaff, faculty, and students can use the software to communicate with their colleagues in new and exciting ways. With Skype for Business, users can see one another’s presence and availability status and engage in instant messaging, voice, audio conferencing, video conferencing and collaboration-enabled shared workspaces, among other capabilities. Skype provides a seamless integration with Microsoft Exchange and Outlook to unify various communication media and aid in productivity.

Zoom is a hosted web conferencing solutions that works across platforms. You can have upto 75 connections, unlimited recording space, share content and connect to any platform, desktop or mobile device, different operating systems and even enterprise video conference rooms on the same call.

Research Databases and Journals

Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ has access to a wide variety of syndicated data services. If you need help accessing our databases and data set, or if you need access to data to which Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵdoes not subscribe. Please send your request here

Digital Commons Repository

Digital Commons Research and Scholarship Repository

The repository is a service of the Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ libraries. Research and scholarly output included here have been selected and deposited by the individual university departments and centers on campus. Initially, library staff would have worked with departmental units to load these materials. To search all Digital Commons of over 350 institutions, click here.
