I often say that the 绿巨人视频Community is a family, and when I glance across this issue of 绿巨人视频Now鈥攚hich really means that when I look across our campuses this month鈥攚hat I see is everyone in the 绿巨人视频family coming together to celebrate the great things we鈥檙e accomplishing.

This year, I鈥檓 happy to report, it really feels like we鈥檝e turned a corner. As I see students on campus and run into faculty in hallways, as I chat with colleagues between meetings and hear from students in the class I teach each fall, I鈥檓 getting a different feeling than I have in some time. It鈥檚 a sense of cautious optimism. A sense that things are different. A sense that we鈥檙e all ready to put all the challenges and difficulties behind us, shake off the malaise of the past few years, and dive into something new.

In our partisan and polarized country, education has become disputed territory.

The news is filled with stories about battles and bans. About books that can鈥檛 be read, topics that can鈥檛 be covered, sensitivities that must be protected. In some parts of the country, curricula are being revised to ensure that American history is presented as only triumphant. Elsewhere, reading lists are being scanned to ensure that all depictions match with today鈥檚 mores.

鈥淎merica鈥檚 two great exports are Hollywood and higher education.鈥 That鈥檚 what a French friend told me when I visited him recently in Paris. After the end of the academic year is the time when college faculty and presidents can stretch their legs, and I recently spent some time in Europe, attending a conference in Greece, a reunion in England, and seeing friends in both England and France. And everywhere I went, I heard uniform praise for America鈥檚 colleges and universities.

Not long ago, I joined 30 accomplished young women to go to the White House.

They weren鈥檛 political science students embarking on internships or aspiring journalists preparing to grill world leaders. Rather, they were the members of the 绿巨人视频Setters women鈥檚 lacrosse team 鈥 newly crowned as the NCAA Division II champs, our first-ever national championship squad 鈥 and they were in Washington for College Athlete Day. While the White House has long invited winners in the big-deal Division I sports for a visit 鈥 your Michigan football teams, your Duke basketball squads 鈥 this was the first time teams from all three NCAA divisions were included.

President Krislov writes in Forbes that older Americans who are living longer are a market for colleges:

Americans are living longer, and better, than ever before. Thanks to improved healthcare, longer lifespans, and other demographic and sociological changes, we can expect to remain active and engaged well into our retirement years鈥攁nd it鈥檚 a trend that is only growing. Already there are about , up from 35 million at the turn of the 21st century. And by 2040, nearly half the U.S. population will be 40 or older. Some 20 percent, almost 80 million people, will be over 65.
